Tulips are one of the most loved cut flowers we arrange here in Dubai, and for good reason. Their smooth, sculptural petals and soft colours bring a calm, elegant feeling to any room. But tulips are also a little different from most other blooms, and if you have ever watched them flop over the side of a vase within a day, you are not alone. In our warm climate, they need a slightly different touch.
The good news is that tulip care is simple once you understand how these flowers behave. We have been hand-arranging fresh flowers in Dubai since 2011, and below we share exactly what we tell our own customers about keeping tulips looking their best, even when the temperature outside is climbing past 40 degrees.
Start with cool water, not warm
Unlike many flowers that appreciate lukewarm water, tulips prefer their water cool. Cool water slows down their metabolism, keeps the stems firm and stops them from opening too quickly. In a Dubai home where the tap water can run warm and the air conditioning is working hard, this small detail makes a real difference.
Fill a clean vase about one-third full, no more. Tulips do not like deep water, and a shallower level helps keep the stems strong. Change the water every one to two days, and each time you do, give the stems a fresh diagonal cut of about two centimetres. Clean water is the single most important habit for long-lasting tulips.
A quick tulip water checklist
- Use cool, clean water filled only one-third up the vase.
- Refresh the water every one to two days.
- Re-cut stems at an angle with each water change.
- Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
Give them bright, indirect light
Tulips love light, but in Dubai direct sun through a window can be brutal. A spot near a window with bright, indirect light is ideal. Keep them away from the direct blast of an air-conditioning vent too, because constant dry, cold air will draw moisture from the petals and shorten their life. A stable, moderately cool room is perfect.
One charming thing to expect: tulips will gently lean and stretch toward the light. If you want them to stay upright and even, simply rotate the vase every day.
Why your tulips keep growing in the vase
Here is something that surprises many people. Tulips are one of the very few cut flowers that continue to grow after they have been cut, sometimes by two or three centimetres. This is completely natural and a sign your tulips are healthy and drinking well. They may also keep turning and bending toward the light, creating that loose, romantic shape tulips are famous for.
If you prefer a tidier look, choose a taller vase that supports the stems, or trim them slightly shorter to begin with. Embracing their movement, though, is part of the charm of having tulips at home.
Reviving droopy tulips in the heat
Dubai's heat is the number one reason tulips droop early. When stems soften and heads flop, do not throw them away, because tulips revive beautifully. Here is our florist trick:
- Re-cut the stems by two to three centimetres at a sharp angle.
- Wrap the tulips snugly, upright, in paper or newspaper so the stems are held straight.
- Stand the wrapped bunch in cool, deep water for two to three hours, ideally in a cooler room.
- Unwrap, and you will usually find the stems have firmed up and straightened.
This works because the paper supports the stems while they rehydrate. It is one of the most satisfying rescues in flower care.

Frequently asked questions
How long do tulips last in Dubai homes?
With cool water, regular water changes and a spot away from direct sun and AC vents, tulips typically last five to seven days indoors. Keeping the room stable and moderately cool extends their life further.
Why are my tulips opening so fast?
Warmth speeds tulips up. If they are opening too quickly, move them to a cooler spot and use cooler water. This slows them down and keeps the blooms looking fresh for longer.
Should I add the flower food sachet?
Yes. A little flower food helps, but with tulips the real priority is clean, cool water changed often. If you run out of food, fresh water alone still keeps tulips very happy.
Can I mix tulips with other flowers?
You can, though tulips keep growing and drinking heavily, so they suit companions that enjoy similar cool, clean conditions. Explore our mixed flower arrangements in Dubai for balanced combinations arranged by our florists.
