Dubai summers are unlike almost anywhere else. When the mercury pushes past 40C and the air outside feels like an open oven, a beautiful bouquet can wilt in hours if you treat it the way flower-care advice from cooler climates suggests. We have been arranging and delivering flowers across Dubai since 2011, and every summer we field the same question from customers: how do I make these last?
The good news is that fresh flowers can thrive indoors here, even in the hottest months, as long as you work with our climate rather than against it. Below are nine practical tips our florists rely on, tuned specifically to Dubai homes, apartments and villas.
1. Keep flowers out of direct AC airflow
It sounds counter-intuitive, but the cold blast from a ceiling or wall air-conditioning vent is one of the fastest ways to kill a bouquet. That moving air strips moisture from petals and leaves far quicker than still, cool air does. Place your vase in a spot that stays comfortably cool but is not directly under a vent or in the path of a standing fan.
2. Change the water every single day
In our heat, bacteria multiply in vase water astonishingly fast. Cloudy, smelly water clogs the stems and starves the blooms. In cooler countries people change water every few days; in Dubai we recommend doing it daily. Rinse the vase, refill with fresh cool (not icy) water, and your flowers will thank you.
3. Trim the stems at an angle
Every time you change the water, snip 1 to 2 cm off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle using a sharp knife or scissors. The angled cut increases the surface area for drinking and stops stems sitting flat on the vase base. This single habit can add days of life.
Why the angle matters
A flat-cut stem can seal itself against the bottom of the vase and simply stop drinking. An angled cut keeps the channel open so water keeps flowing up to the petals, which is exactly what you need when indoor humidity is low.
4. Strip leaves below the waterline
Any foliage sitting under the water will rot within a day in warm conditions, turning the water murky and shortening vase life. Remove every leaf that would sit below the waterline before you arrange the stems.
5. Choose the coolest room in the home
Flowers last longest between about 18C and 22C. In most Dubai homes that means a shaded living room or bedroom kept on AC, away from the kitchen (heat and fruit) and away from sunny windows. Many customers move their bouquet to the coolest room overnight and enjoy it in the living area by day.
6. Keep flowers away from windows and balconies
Direct sunlight through Dubai glass acts like a magnifier. Even behind closed curtains, a windowsill can be many degrees warmer than the rest of the room. Keep arrangements well away from windows, glass doors and, needless to say, the balcony.
7. Never store flowers near fruit
Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes flowers age and drop petals prematurely. A fruit bowl on the same counter as your bouquet is a common, invisible culprit. Keep them in separate rooms if you can.
8. Use the flower food, and use it correctly
The little sachet that comes with your bouquet is not a gimmick. It balances the water, feeds the blooms and slows bacteria. Dissolve it fully in the correct volume of water. If you run out, a very small amount of sugar with a drop of household bleach can help, though the proper sachet is always better.
9. Give thirsty blooms a cool overnight drink
If a bouquet looks tired after a hot day, recut the stems and stand them in a bucket of cool water in the coolest room for a few hours or overnight. Hydrangeas in particular love a full-head soak. They often perk up beautifully by morning.
Quick reference: dos and don'ts in Dubai heat
- Do change water daily and trim stems each time.
- Do keep flowers in a cool, shaded, AC-controlled room.
- Don't place them under an AC vent, near windows, or beside fruit.
- Don't use icy water; cool room-temperature water is kinder to stems.

Frequently asked questions
How long should fresh flowers last in Dubai?
With daily water changes and the tips above, most bouquets last five to seven days indoors, and hardier varieties like chrysanthemums and orchids can go well beyond that. Without care in our heat, the same flowers might last only two to three days.
Should I keep flowers in the fridge in summer?
A short spell in a cool fridge overnight can extend life, but keep them away from fruit and vegetables (ethylene) and never let petals touch the cold back wall, which can cause frost damage. A cool AC room is usually easier and just as effective.
Is tap water or bottled water better for my vase?
Clean, cool tap water is perfectly fine for the vast majority of flowers. Consistency and cleanliness matter far more than the type of water, so change it daily and keep the vase spotless.
Why do my flowers droop by the afternoon?
Afternoon drooping is almost always heat and dehydration. Move the arrangement to a cooler spot away from windows, recut the stems, and top up with fresh cool water. They usually recover within a few hours.
