Bringing home a fresh bouquet should feel like pure joy, not a worry. But if you share your Dubai apartment or villa with a curious cat or a nose-into-everything dog, a few common flowers can turn a happy gift into a trip to the vet. As florists who hand-arrange every order fresh each morning, we get asked about pet safety often, and we love the question. Here is our honest, practical guide to building beautiful bouquets that are gentle on your four-legged family.
Why pet-safe flowers matter in a Dubai home
Most of us keep our flowers indoors, in the cool of the air conditioning, which means blooms and pets often share the same space. A cat may bat at a stem on the console table; a puppy may nibble a fallen petal. Some flowers cause nothing worse than a mild upset tummy, while others are genuinely dangerous. Knowing the difference lets you enjoy fresh flowers all year round with total peace of mind.
A quick note before we begin: we are florists, not veterinarians. If your pet ever eats part of a plant and seems unwell, call your Dubai vet straight away. When in doubt, keep the arrangement out of reach.
The flowers to keep away from pets
A handful of popular blooms are best avoided in homes with animals, or at least kept well out of paw's reach.
- Lilies — the most important one. True lilies are extremely toxic to cats; even pollen brushed onto fur and then licked can cause serious harm. We recommend skipping lilies entirely in cat households.
- Tulips and daffodils — the bulbs are the most toxic part, but stems and flowers can still upset both cats and dogs.
- Chrysanthemums — a common cause of drooling and stomach upset if chewed.
- Hyacinth and hydrangea — both can cause vomiting and irritation.
This is not the full list, so if you are unsure about a specific flower, just ask us when you order and we will happily guide you.
Beautiful blooms that are gentle on cats and dogs
The good news is that some of the most gorgeous, long-lasting flowers we work with are widely considered pet-friendlier choices. You are not stuck with a boring bouquet.
Roses
Classic, romantic and non-toxic to cats and dogs (do watch the thorns, which we strip and tidy for you). A rose bouquet is always a safe-feeling choice. Explore our roses in Dubai collection for every colour and occasion.
Orchids
Elegant, architectural and long-lasting in Dubai's climate, orchids are generally considered non-toxic and make a stunning, low-shedding centrepiece. See our orchids collection.
Sunflowers, gerbera daisies and snapdragons
Cheerful and bright, these are popular pet-friendlier picks that bring instant warmth to a room. They mix beautifully together in a hand-tied bunch.
Freesia, lisianthus and stock
For softer, romantic arrangements with lovely fragrance and texture, these are lovely gentler options. Many of them feature in our mixed flowers designs.
Simple habits that keep flowers and pets happy
Choosing the right blooms is half the story. A few small habits go a long way in a busy Dubai home.
- Place arrangements up high — a shelf, a tall console or a hanging spot keeps curious mouths away.
- Sweep up fallen petals and leaves promptly, especially with playful kittens and puppies.
- Change the vase water daily — pets sometimes drink from vases, and fresh water is safer and keeps flowers lasting longer.
- Keep flower food sachets sealed and away from pets.

Frequently asked questions
Are roses safe for cats and dogs?
Yes, the rose flower itself is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The main thing to watch is the thorns, which can scratch. We remove and tidy thorns on every rose bouquet before delivery.
My cat brushed against a lily. What should I do?
Lilies are especially dangerous for cats, and even pollen on the fur can be a risk once licked off. Gently wipe any pollen away and contact your vet immediately for advice, even if your cat seems fine.
Can you make a fully pet-friendlier bouquet for me?
Absolutely. Just leave a note when you order, or message us, and our florists will design an arrangement around gentler blooms like roses, orchids, sunflowers and lisianthus.
Is baby's breath safe around pets?
Baby's breath is considered only mildly irritating and can cause a mild tummy upset if eaten in quantity. We are happy to leave it out of your arrangement on request.
