Orchid Care Guide for Dubai Homes

Orchids have a reputation for being fussy, but in truth they are one of the best-suited flowering plants for a Dubai home. These are tropical plants at heart, so our warmth actually works in their favour. The one thing that trips up most Dubai orchid owners is not the heat outside but the dry, cool air of constant air conditioning indoors.

Get the balance right and a single orchid can bloom for two to three months, then flower again year after year. Here is exactly how our florists care for orchids in the UAE.

Understanding your orchid

The most common orchid in Dubai homes is the Phalaenopsis, or moth orchid, with its arching sprays of rounded blooms. It naturally grows on trees in humid tropical forests, clinging to bark rather than sitting in soil. That single fact explains almost everything about how to care for it: it wants air around its roots, gentle moisture and filtered light, never a soggy pot or harsh sun.

Watering: the number one thing to get right

Overwatering kills far more orchids than underwatering, especially in pots that hold moisture. In most Dubai homes, watering roughly once a week is right, though AC-dried air can occasionally call for a little more.

How to water correctly

  • Check the roots: plump and green means hydrated; silvery-grey means it is ready for water.
  • Water with cool, room-temperature water; let it drain completely so no water sits in the pot or the decorative cover.
  • Never leave the roots standing in water, which quickly causes rot in warm conditions.

The old ice-cube trick is popular online, but we do not recommend it for a tropical plant; cool water that drains freely is far kinder.

Light: bright but never direct

Orchids love bright, indirect light. An east-facing windowsill or a spot a metre or two back from a bright window is ideal. What they cannot tolerate is direct Dubai sun through glass, which scorches leaves within hours. If the leaves look yellowed or feel warm, move the plant back from the window. Healthy orchid leaves are a fresh, grassy green.

Humidity and air conditioning

This is the real challenge in Dubai. Air conditioning keeps homes comfortable but strips humidity from the air, and orchids prefer 50 to 70 percent humidity. To recreate their tropical comfort zone:

  • Stand the pot on a shallow tray of pebbles with a little water below the pot base (roots must stay above the water).
  • Group orchids and other plants together to create a moister micro-climate.
  • Keep the plant well away from AC vents and cold draughts, which dry and chill the blooms.
  • Mist the aerial roots lightly in the morning if your home is very dry.

Temperature and feeding

Phalaenopsis orchids are happy in the same temperatures we are, around 20C to 28C indoors. Interestingly, a slight night-time drop can actually encourage re-blooming, so a cooler room overnight is beneficial. Feed with a diluted orchid fertiliser roughly every two to three weeks while the plant is in active growth, and pause during rest periods.

Encouraging your orchid to bloom again

When the last flower fades, do not discard the plant. Trim the spent flower spike just above a visible node and continue normal care. With good light and that gentle night-time temperature dip, many orchids push out a fresh spike within a couple of months. Patience is rewarded generously.

Quick orchid care summary

Light Bright, indirect; never direct sun through glass
Humidity Pebble tray, grouping, keep away from AC vents
Temperature 20-28C, with a slight night-time drop to trigger blooms
Feeding Diluted orchid feed every 2-3 weeks in growth

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water my orchid in Dubai?

Usually about once a week, but let the roots be your guide. Silvery-grey roots want water; plump green roots do not. Always let the pot drain fully so the roots never sit in water.

Why are my orchid's leaves turning yellow?

Yellowing leaves usually mean too much direct sun or overwatering. Move the plant away from harsh light and check that the pot is draining freely and the roots are not sitting wet.

Can orchids survive Dubai's air conditioning?

Yes, very well, as long as you keep them out of the direct cold airflow and raise the humidity around them with a pebble tray or by grouping plants. The warmth of our climate actually suits them.

Will my orchid flower again?

Almost certainly, with patience. After the blooms drop, trim the spike above a node, keep up good light and a slight night-time temperature dip, and a new spike often appears within a couple of months.
