Some bouquets are too special to say goodbye to. A wedding arrangement, an anniversary bunch, the flowers from a moment you never want to forget. The lovely thing is that you do not have to let them go. With a little patience, you can dry or press your blooms and keep them for years. As Dubai florists, we are asked about this all the time, and honestly, our dry climate makes it easier here than almost anywhere. Here is how to turn a fresh bouquet into a keepsake that lasts.
Drying versus pressing: which is right for you?
Both methods preserve flowers, but they give very different results, so it helps to decide what you want before you begin.
- Drying keeps the flower's three-dimensional shape, perfect for displaying in a vase, hanging as a bunch, or filling a frame with depth.
- Pressing flattens the bloom, ideal for framing behind glass, making cards, bookmarks or resin keepsakes.
If your bouquet has full, rounded flowers like roses, drying often shows them off best. For delicate, flat-faced flowers, pressing is beautiful. You can even do both with a single mixed bunch.
How to air-dry flowers (the easiest method)
Air-drying is the classic approach, and Dubai's low humidity indoors makes it wonderfully reliable.
Step by step
- Choose fresh blooms just before they are fully open, and remove excess leaves from the stems.
- Bundle loosely in small bunches and tie the stems with twine or an elastic band that tightens as they shrink.
- Hang upside down in a dry, dark, airy spot away from direct sunlight, which fades colour. A wardrobe or a shaded room works well.
- Wait two to three weeks until the petals feel papery and crisp.
Roses, statice, lavender and gypsophila all air-dry beautifully. Many blooms from our roses collection are ideal candidates.
How to press flowers
Pressing is perfect for creating framed art or keepsakes from a meaningful bouquet.
The book method
- Lay each flower flat between two sheets of plain paper or parchment.
- Place them inside a heavy book, spacing flowers so they do not overlap.
- Stack more books or a weight on top.
- Leave for two to four weeks, changing the paper after a few days to absorb moisture.
Flat-faced flowers from our mixed flowers designs, such as daisies and pansies, press especially well. For thicker blooms, split them in half first so they flatten evenly.
Keeping the colour beautiful
The biggest disappointment is a keepsake that has faded to brown. A few habits protect the colour.
- Work quickly with flowers at their freshest, before they start to wilt.
- Keep everything out of direct sunlight during drying and afterwards on display, as UV is the enemy of colour.
- Try silica gel for faster drying that locks in vivid colour, burying blooms gently in the crystals in a sealed container.
- Handle finished flowers gently, as dried petals are fragile.
Because our blooms arrive hand-arranged fresh that morning, you are starting from the best possible condition. Frequently asked questions
How long do dried and pressed flowers last?
Kept away from direct sunlight and humidity, dried and pressed flowers can last for years, often several. Colours will soften gradually over time, which many people find part of their charm.
Which flowers preserve best?
Roses, lavender, statice, gypsophila and daisies are among the most reliable. Very juicy or thick flowers are trickier, though silica gel helps with fuller blooms.
Does Dubai's climate affect drying?
In a good way. Our air-conditioned indoor spaces are dry, which speeds up air-drying and reduces the risk of mould. Just keep flowers out of any humid area, such as near a bathroom.
Can I dry a whole bouquet at once?
Yes, but split it into smaller bunches so air can move around each stem. Crowded bundles dry unevenly and can develop mould in the centre.
