How to Care for Roses at Home: A Dubai Guide

Few flowers say as much as a rose, and few are as rewarding to care for well. A fresh bouquet of roses can look glorious for a full week, or wilt sadly within two days, and the difference almost always comes down to how they are handled once they reach your home. In Dubai, with its intense heat and drying air conditioning, a little know-how goes a long way.

Our florists have been arranging roses for Dubai customers since 2011. Here is exactly how we keep cut roses looking their best for as long as possible in this climate.

Start the moment your roses arrive

The first hour matters most. Roses are thirsty flowers, and after any time out of water they need to rehydrate quickly. As soon as your bouquet arrives, prepare a clean vase of cool water and get the stems drinking before you do anything else.

First steps checklist

  • Fill a clean vase with cool, fresh water and add the flower-food sachet.
  • Re-cut each stem by 2 to 3 cm at a 45-degree angle under running water if possible.
  • Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
  • Place the vase in a cool, shaded spot straight away.

Cutting stems the right way

An angled cut is essential. It exposes more surface area for drinking and prevents the stem sealing against the vase base. Use a sharp knife or florist scissors rather than blunt household scissors, which crush the stem and block water uptake. Re-cut a little each time you change the water.

Water: fresh, cool and frequent

In Dubai's heat, vase water turns cloudy with bacteria quickly, and that bacteria is what clogs rose stems and shortens their life. Change the water every day, rinse the vase each time, and always use cool water rather than warm. Top up the level too, as roses drink a surprising amount in the first couple of days.

Finding the right spot in a Dubai home

Roses last longest in a cool room, ideally between 18C and 22C, out of direct sunlight. The specific Dubai pitfalls to avoid are:

  • Direct AC airflow, which dries petals and edges rapidly.
  • Sunny windowsills and glass doors, where trapped heat cooks the blooms.
  • Fruit bowls, as ripening fruit releases ethylene gas that ages roses fast.
  • Kitchens, which combine heat, humidity swings and fruit in one place.

Reviving droopy roses

If a rose head flops on its stem, the cause is usually an air lock or dehydration rather than the end of its life. To revive it, re-cut the stem and lay the whole rose flat in a sink or bath of cool water for 20 to 30 minutes so the stem and petals can drink through their full length. Many roses stand tall again afterwards. It is one of the most satisfying florist tricks there is.

A quick word on rose colours

Part of the joy of roses is choosing the colour to match the message, from passionate red to friendly yellow and gentle pink. If you are gifting, our guide to rose colour meanings is a lovely place to start before you order.

Frequently asked questions

How long do cut roses last in Dubai?

With daily water changes, angled stem cuts and a cool spot away from AC and sun, good-quality roses reliably last five to eight days at home in Dubai. Neglected in the heat, the same roses may last only two to three days.

Should I remove the guard petals on my roses?

The slightly bruised outer guard petals protect the bloom in transit. You can gently remove one or two once the roses are home to reveal a cleaner, fuller flower, but there is no need to strip them all.

Why are the edges of my rose petals turning brown?

Browning edges usually point to heat or dry air, often from direct AC airflow or a warm, sunny position. Move the vase to a cooler, shaded spot away from vents and refresh the water.

Can I keep roses in the fridge overnight?

Yes, a cool fridge overnight can extend their life, as florists store roses cold. Just keep them away from fruit and vegetables and make sure petals do not touch the cold back wall of the fridge.
