Few flowers make people smile quite like a gerbera daisy. Those big, open faces in electric pink, sunset orange and buttery yellow bring instant cheer to any room. But we will be honest with you: gerberas are a little more demanding than they look, and Dubai's climate tests them. The good news is that once you understand what makes them tick, they are easy to keep happy. Here is everything our florists have learned about caring for gerberas in the emirate, so yours stand tall and bright for as long as possible.
Why gerberas need a little extra attention
Gerberas have thick, fleshy stems that are mostly water. That is why they can bend and flop so dramatically when they are thirsty or when bacteria block the stem. The heavy flower head sits on top of a hollow, soft stem, so support and clean water are the two things that matter most. In a hot climate like ours, water quality degrades faster, which means gerberas reward you for staying on top of the basics.
The golden rules of gerbera care
- Shallow water, always. Unlike most flowers, gerberas prefer only 3 to 5 cm of water in the vase. Deep water rots their soft stems and shortens their life dramatically.
- Keep the water spotless. Change it every single day if you can. Cloudy water is the number one killer of gerberas in Dubai homes.
- Cut straight, not angled. A straight cut works well for these stems. Trim 2 cm off with a clean, sharp blade.
- Support the heads. If stems start to bend, a tall, narrow vase or a floral wire threaded up the stem keeps them upright.

Beating the Dubai heat
Gerberas wilt fastest when they are warm and thirsty at the same time. Because their stems hold so much water, they are quick to show heat stress with a sudden droop. Position them in the coolest, brightest part of your home, but never in direct sun and never right under an AC vent, where the dry draught pulls moisture from the petals. If your gerberas flop on a hot afternoon, they are not necessarily finished, as we explain below.
Rescuing a drooping gerbera
A bent gerbera is one of the most reviveable flowers there is. Try this florist trick:
- Fill a sink or deep bowl with cool water.
- Re-cut 2 cm off the stem under the water.
- Lay the whole flower flat in the water so the stem is fully submerged and the head floats.
- Leave it for 30 to 60 minutes, then return it to a clean, shallow vase.
Nine times out of ten the stem firms up and the head lifts again.

Styling gerberas at home
Gerberas look striking on their own in a clean glass vase, where their bold colour does all the work. They also bring energy to a mixed flower arrangement, adding a pop of colour among softer roses and carnations. If you have fallen for their sunny personality, our gerbera collection is hand-arranged fresh each morning, and they pair beautifully with the everyday charm of our carnations.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my gerbera keep bending over?
Bending is caused by a soft, water-clogged stem, usually from dirty water or too-deep water. Re-cut the stem, use only shallow clean water, and support the head in a narrow vase.
How long do gerberas last in Dubai?
Expect 7 to 10 days with daily water changes and cool placement. They are shorter-lived than carnations but very rewarding.
Why is shallow water better for gerberas?
Their soft, fuzzy stems absorb water and rot easily. Keeping only a few centimetres of water in the vase prevents the stem from becoming waterlogged.
Can I mix gerberas with other flowers?
Absolutely, though the shallow-water rule then becomes a compromise. In a mixed vase, change the water daily and re-trim gerbera stems often to keep them at their best.
