Few floral traditions are as charming, or as quietly confusing, as the corsage and the boutonniere. Guests at Dubai weddings, graduations and formal dinners often ask us the same questions: which is which, who wears them, and how on earth do you pin one on without a mishap? After hand-arranging these little blooms since 2011, we are delighted to clear it all up.
This simple guide walks you through both pieces, from their names to their care, so you can wear or gift them with complete confidence.
What is a corsage?
A corsage is a small floral arrangement worn by a woman, traditionally pinned to the dress near the shoulder or, more popularly today, slipped onto the wrist on an elastic or ribbon band. It celebrates the wearer, and you will most often see corsages on mothers of the bride and groom, grandmothers, prom attendees and guests of honour.
Wrist corsages have become the firm favourite in Dubai because they are comfortable, they never tug at delicate fabric, and they photograph beautifully as hands come together for toasts and photos.
What is a boutonniere?
A boutonniere, sometimes called a buttonhole, is a single bloom or small cluster worn by a man on the left lapel of a jacket. Grooms, groomsmen, fathers and male guests of honour wear them to mark their role in the celebration.
The boutonniere is deliberately understated, usually one focal flower with a touch of greenery, chosen to complement rather than compete with the bridal bouquet.
Who wears what, and when
It helps to picture the whole wedding party together. Here is the classic breakdown we arrange most often.
| Person | Piece | Typical placement |
|---|---|---|
| Groom | Boutonniere | Left lapel, distinct from groomsmen |
| Groomsmen | Boutonniere | Left lapel, matching |
| Mothers & grandmothers | Corsage | Wrist or shoulder |
| Prom attendee | Corsage or boutonniere | Wrist or lapel |
Which flowers work best
Because these pieces are small and worn for hours, the flower has to be sturdy. Our most reliable choices are roses, spray roses, orchids and ranunculus, all of which hold their shape without a water source.
Popular choices
- Roses: classic, structured and long-lasting; browse our Dubai roses for colour ideas
- Orchids: exotic and resilient, ideal for warm days, from our orchid collection
- White blooms: timeless for formal events; see our white flowers
For weddings, we colour-match the corsages and boutonnieres to the main wedding flowers so the whole party looks beautifully coordinated.
How to pin a boutonniere without stress
Pinning is the moment most people dread, but it is easier than it looks. Position the flower on the left lapel, roughly over the heart, with the bloom pointing up. Push the pearl-headed pin in from behind the lapel, catching the stem, then back out through the fabric so the pin stays hidden. One sturdy pin is usually enough; a second, crossed behind, adds security for a long night of dancing.
Keeping them fresh in Dubai's heat
Heat is the enemy of any tiny arrangement, so timing matters. If your event is later in the day, keep corsages and boutonnieres in their box in the refrigerator, away from fruit, until an hour before you leave. Never place them in the freezer, and mist very lightly if they look thirsty. Because we hand-arrange fresh every morning, your pieces arrive at their peak, giving you the longest possible window of freshness.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I order corsages and boutonnieres?
A few days ahead is ideal so we can secure your chosen blooms and colours. We arrange fresh each morning, so last-minute requests are often possible too; just get in touch and we will do our best.
Can I keep a corsage after the event?
Yes. Many people dry their corsage as a keepsake by hanging it upside down in a cool, dark spot for a couple of weeks. The colours fade gently but the memory stays.
What is the difference between a pin-on and a wrist corsage?
A pin-on attaches to fabric near the shoulder, while a wrist corsage sits on a band around the wrist. Wrist styles are more popular in Dubai because they are comfortable and never damage delicate dresses.
